SPA libraryLiberal Democrat county councillors have today welcomed the announcement that the County Council has extended the public consultation on the future of the Surrey Performing Arts Library to four weeks up to 1st October 2017. The Conservative-administration had previously only offered two weeks for library users to respond to the County Council's plans, which include closing the library in order to make savings of £180,000.

Cllr Hazel Watson, Leader of the Liberal Democrats on Surrey County Council, said today:

"I am pleased that the County Council responded to my request to extend the consultation period as two weeks was clearly not long enough to allow Surrey residents to respond. I also welcome the decision by the County Council to accept comments from all residents and not just service users, which had been overly restrictive.

"More than 650 people so far have signed our petition to retain the Library in its current form which shows the strength of feeling towards this highly valued and unique service. Any Surrey residents who have not signed the petition or responded to the consultation should do so as quickly as possible in order to preserve Surrey's Performing Arts Library for years to come".
