Why do Liberal Democrats support voting “Remain in the EU”?

June 19, 2016 11:50 PM

EU FlagWe believe passionately in the value of the European Union.

Its parliament, with elected MEPs from each of 28 countries, safeguards the rights of ordinary citizens against the possible abuse of power by national governments or multinational corporations.

The EU remains in need of reform, although much has already been achieved, largely through the initiative of British MEPs. The common agricultural policy and the fisheries policy are often quoted.

Power also needs to be shifted from the European Council, who represent national governments, to the European Parliament, which is directly elected by ordinary people.

The European Commission is often criticised. The commissioners are EU civil servants. They advise and administer, but they do not have any authority to take decisions.
