Sharon Bowles MEP joins support for Libya’s National Transitional Council

March 10, 2011 11:56 AM

Chair of the European Parliament's powerful Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee, Sharon Bowles, Lib Dem MEP for SE England, has today proffered her support for Libya's National Transitional Council, formed by anti-Gaddafi rebels in the city of Benghazi two weeks ago.

Following a debate in the European Parliament this week with Catherine Ashton, the EU's High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Ms Bowles said:

"Decision makers in Europe are responding effectively to the situation in Libya. The EU-Libya trade agreement was suspended at an early stage of the crisis and many people in Brussels, me included, want to see a democratically elected government in Libya.

"In the meantime, the European Parliament will be supporting Libya's new National Transitional Council.

"Additionally, the liberal group in the European Parliament is saying 'no' to military intervention as it is important that the Libyan revolution stays Libyan.

"That said, we are urging for there to be a no-fly zone over Libya as a matter of priority, policed by the UN, so that Gaddafi is forced to stop bombing his own people."
