Last Day of Plan E Consultation

August 23, 2009 7:13 PM
Stockton High Street

Would greater pedestrianisation of Epsom High Street find favour with local residents?

The future of Epsom town centre could depend upon the results of the Plan E consultation, which closes on 24th August.

Residents and councillors alike have the opportunity to comment upon proposals. Of particular interest are suggestions for traffic flow in and around Epsom, with several options available including the widening of Ashley Avenue so it could take two-way traffic, and the return of South Street to two-way traffic. These two options together have long been favoured by Lib Dem councillors, since they dictate that no vehicles other than public transport would need to use High Street West (the Clock Tower end of the High Street). The market place area could thus be widened and air pollution reduced. Though not entirely pedestrianised, High Street West would no longer be subjected to the continuous stream of vehicles and the frequent log-jams. These options are not straightforward choices : the Spread Eagle junction would need to be widened and the expansion of Ashley Avenue would need funding. Road schemes are mostly beyond the finances of the Borough Council and would need to attract funding from central sources.
