Did you know they collect Batteries?

February 4, 2009 10:22 AM
Doorstep collection of batteries

Household batteries are now collected by the council's recycling vehicles

Liberal Democrats are pleased to publicise that the council's recycling vehicles also now collect household batteries and claim most residents have no idea that their doorstep collection will deal with these items.

Cllr David Morgan (Lib Dem, Court) said "We knew the council was going to buy special boxes for their vehicles to collect these - because they are classified as toxic waste - and despite insisting that they publicise the new service, they have never done so. A paragraph has crept in on the council's website though!"

Cllr Morgan says that some family households can get through a large quantity of batteries because some kinds of equipment will not accept re-chargeable batteries. "People use batteries more and more in everyday life" he says "in remote controls, smoke alarms and in game machines for example". Batteries should be left out with other material for collection and put in a small bag. "Actually, I just put mine in an empty can on top of the pile so they are visible. The can and the batteries are taken, so the system works."
