Residents Bidding to Save Wildlife Habitat

Badgers and their setts are protected by law

When BRBR announced it was to sell an acre of railway cutting land, a group of local residents were inspired to bid to protect it as wildlife habitat.

The green space is located alongside Mill Road in Epsom and is to be sold by auction on Thursday 29th May. A group of local residents including Councillor Julie Morris have joined together and will bid to save the land. Julie said "I have an entirely personal interest in protecting this strip of land because it is the outlook from my own house and I would rather not see it developed. However, I cannot think of another piece of land in the centre of Epsom which is entirely unspoiled and used by wildlife of all kinds, including certainly badgers and, we think, bats. Trees have been planted by local residents over the years - walnut, maple, prunus, etc. and it needs surveying professionally so that the trees are protected as well. It has to be worth saving and the residents of Bridge Road and Mill Road will do their utmost to protect it."

If the group, as yet unnamed, are successful, they will retain it as green space and seek advice on its future management. One of the first things they all agree upon though, is to clear the huge amount of litter and debris that has accumulated over the years - the result of flytipping - and they will be reaching out to the local community to help with this activity.

For further information contact Julie. If you would like to know the result of the auction, Friday 30th May is the day to make contact.
